Kids’ Bathroom remodel with pops of light turquoise, yellow, and green

This makeover is sponsored by Behr®. All opinions are 100% my own.

There’s a room in my house that has never been on All Things Thrifty until today. It is small and awkward, and to get a good photo is tough because there’s no natural light. Plus, the ceiling angles are kinda intense. It’s the kids’ bathroom, and it’s pretty darn nasty at times.

Please tell me I’m not the only one that goes into the specified “kids” bathroom in their home and kind of wants to die because all of the good parenting thoughts that has entered my mind over the past year quickly disappears. When I enter into the kids bathroom, I suddenly realize that no one in the house cares to clean except ME.

It doesn’t help that the bathroom is upstairs, so in my defense, the kids kind of live up there by themselves. I don’t venture up there much because it causes unhappiness. It’s never as clean as I want it to be up there. That’s where all the kids bedrooms are, the play room, and the tan dungeon of a bathroom exists.

Out of sight means out of mind for this Mom. So, I kinda forgot that the bathroom looked like 2007.

Admit it, it screams 2007.

The laminate countertop was on the verge of getting melted on a daily basis by my teenage daughter’s curling iron or straightening iron too.

Behr asked if we had a space that needed a quick makeover, and my mind automatically went to the kids bathroom. I knew it needed it. But, I was a little afraid to tackle such a big project in only seven days. But, we decided to go for it, and we needed to incorporate two things:

  1. The makeover was to be inspired by an istock photo, {that we got to choose}, and
  2. We were given $1000 to Home Depot to complete the task.

The istock photo we chose was this beauty:

The vanity color was speaking my love language, and the bright white trim, and the light gray walls, were exactly the light and airy vibe I was aiming for.

So, what do you think!?! Can you even BELIEVE it’s the same room!?! Grey, white, and Turquoise bathroom decor ideas-12

Let me remind you of what the room looked like before, shall we take a gander together?

The cabinet had some water damage because my kids were splashing maniacs when they were littler. But now that they are older and hopefully wiser, we repaired the cabinet with a little love and a few fresh coats of Behr paint.  The color I chose is called Clear Pond and to lighten it slightly I had the nice lady at the Home Depot Paint department tint it to 75% saturation.

First, we deglossed the cabinets with deglosser from Home Depot, then we sanded the water damaged spots smooth with 220 grit sand paper.

Next, we primed it with Kilz primer, and let it dry completely, and sanded softly again with 220 grit sandpaper.

My husband took the cabinet out of the bathroom to redo the tile, so it was pretty easy to paint it because of that.

I loaded the perfect light turquoise {Behr Clear Pond at 75% saturation} into my trusty paint sprayer and painted the cabinet into a new life. It looks completely new again. I am in love.

While I was painting, Dan was busy removing the existing tile, and painting the bathroom walls Behr Whitewash Oak again at 75% to lighten it slightly. I loved the full saturated color, but since this bathroom has no natural light at all, I needed to make sure that it wasn’t too dark in there.

He installed new hardie backer, and then we picked a light gray beautiful linen tile to replace it. {only $1.69 a square foot}

Dan installed new baseboards, and we built floating shelves for above the toilet using our friends from Shanty 2 Chic’s tutorial.

Then, we framed the mirror with stained 1×4 pine boards to dress up the mirror. We attached the boards to the mirror with industrial double stick tape.

We also replaced the hardware on the cabinet with these darling knobs and pulls from the Liberty line at HD.

We installed a new Kohler faucet.  {only $89}

And a new modern farmhouse light fixture too. {It was only $69.97 too!}

We had a friend with a remnant piece of quartz and they hooked us up to replace the countertop.

Now I don’t need to worry so much about the teenage daughter with her curling iron.

The first time I find the bathroom in a mess, I’m going to count to ten and calmly remember that my kids are not adults yet.  But, I will definitely try to check it more often now that the upstairs is finally completely redone.

If you missed the playroom reveal, check it out, plus, the boys’ room and the girls’ room are pretty darn cute too.

Hope you like it! And cross your fingers my kids have learned to splash less in the last seven years. 🙂

Have a great weekend.

P.S. My husband is a rockstar.

  1. I love it!!! It looks so bright now!! You guys did awesome–I can’t believe you did it in only 7 days!!!

  2. I would love to know where you got the rug!! I love the colors in it and would match our bathroom.

  3. Love it! Do you know if there is a place in St. George that sells granite and quartz remnants?

    1. YES! I’m pretty sure Quality Surfaces does! We bought ours from a friend, but Daron is who polished the edges and cut the sink hole for us. His number is: 435-619-6557. Tell him All Things Thrifty sent you. 🙂

  4. There are so many things about this makeover that I love! You used double stick tape to frame the wood around the mirror, I absolutely love the shade of turquoise you painted the cabinet, what a find with the new Kohler faucet for only $89! And, most of all I am obsessed with the gray linen tiles on the floor. This is a stunning renovation for only $1000! Consider me inspired!
