Happy summer friends!! Jo here! Can you believe we are this close to July and that the year is half over! It is crazy and the older I get, the faster time seems to go. Is that the case for you too?
Anyway, I am back with you guys today sharing a fun summer tradition that my girls love to do! And it’s just in time for the 4th too!! We have done this every June for a while now and it’s such a fun way to kick things off!
The best part is it is so easy and cheap and seriously takes less than an hour from start to finish! I have to leave a disclaimer though…. this is not an easy process to reverse so if your school does not allow colored hair come fall, you might just have to cut those locks. In fact, my oldest daughter was nervous about having to cut hers so she opted out this year! 🙁 Dang kiddos with opinions! Ha!
Here’s what you need:
- one cup boiling hot water
- one packet of kool-aid {In whatever color you prefer. If you are wanting red/pink, we have learned that Tropical Punch makes the hair a little more hot pink where cherry is definitely RED!}
- a whisk
- mason jar {or something that can hold REALLY hot water}
- some rubber gloves
- an old towel
Begin by emptying your kool-aid packet into the jar. Next, bring your cup of water to a boil, then add it to the jar with the kool-aid powder then mix, whisk together. {Warning: this is suuuuper hot!}
While this is hot, dip the ends of the hair into the glass jar and hold for about 10 mins. {Or until the desired color is achieved.}
You just need to move it around a little and make sure to get any front pieces that tend to be a bit shorter.
Once it’s the color you like, use an old towel and gently blot the hair. Brush through it, make sure it’s how you like it and then let it completely dry. My Sadie had washed her hair the night before so I actually waited until the next morning to wash it.
**Note: If you need to do another round, just reheat the mixture in the jar and use it again. You can usually do a couple rounds with this.**
It turned out so cute and is just the right amount. Plus as we continue to wash it, it will fade.
It’s kinda perfect for the upcoming holiday don’t you think??
She’s pretty camera shy. 😉
Well there you have it friends! Super easy and so fun! What are some fun summer things you like to do?
Until next time,
Jo
Wow, what a neat idea and hardly any cost. I would have enjoyed knowing this when my children were younger. However, absolutely awesome. Thanks for sharing. Even though I a lot older now. who knows if I just might try it myself.
Aww she is adorable and so is her hair.
how many washes until it came out completely?
It was in for about 20 washes.
Hi there! SUCH A NEAT IDEA!!! I wanna try it on myself!! Does the color run if I sweat? What about if it’s raining… will it bleed and stain clothes? I SOOOO want to do this but don’t want to ruin my whole wardrobe…..
Thanks so much in advance for any advice/tips you might have.

My sister did this on her daughter a month ago and it hasn’t come out. Any tips?
We usually just cut the ends so I’m not sure… you could try and google it though. I think there is a recipe on how to get it out with vinegar. Good luck!!
I did mine back in June 0f 2019 and it still has not came out.
If you’re desperate, you could try dish washing liquid or laundry detergent. Use ONLY on the colored ends as it will be drying so make sure to use a good conditioner too. A leave in conditioner might help release the color…. her hair is holding it because it’s likely a little dry and therefore porous . Good luck!

After you wash the hair does the kool aid leave a sticky residue? If so how many washed before it’s no longer sticky?
Nope!! No sticky residue … there isn’t any sugar in it.
What about chlorine water?
How would you use this to dye a Mohawk?
I tried this and it works amazingly!!! My daughter has a camp coming up. Will it wash out in pool water?
Ours stayed all summer and we’re in the pool at least once a week!
Awesome post! Do you know if it works on brunettes?
Do you always just do the ends? I’m worried about doing up by my daughter’s scalp if it boiling water. My girls want to dye their hair (5 & 10) because their older brother did the real deal. I’m only agreeing to temporary and in the summer! ?
Yes, just the ends because in order to get rid of it, you have to cut it out. You can totally dye as much as you want, I would just be suuuuuper careful if you do it up by her scalp! And know that it doesn’t come out easily!
You can crush a few Vitamin C tablets and make a paste and leave it on for 20 minutes and it will strip out the color without damage.
This is a brilliant idea. Thank you for sharing. I have short hair and would like to do this myself.
Any suggestions or tips?
I am 58 years old and I put my hair in big side high pony tails and just dipped the edges in the purple koolaide it worked great I love it . Keeping it in pony tails really helped control the color!
