The kids thought helping with the yard sounded fun when I told them we were going to “work outside” for a few hours as a family. They didn’t know what they were getting themselves into. Heck, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into either. If you missed the before pictures of the yard, check them out here.
I’m glad I took this picture before we started working. After about 15 minutes, all smiles had turned upside down. The goal for this project is to 1. add more color and 2. lessen the southwest desert feel of the landscaping.
We first removed the rocks from an area about 12 feet by 8 feet. I thought we would make about 5 loads with the wheel barrow. I was wrong. It was at least 15.
After an hour and a half of hauling rocks, the kids had slowly tried to sneak back inside, but after the rocks were moved, the rest was the fun part.
We mixed 4 bags of pay dirt {from our local nursery} into the soil to prime the soil for the flowers.
Then we installed soaker hose and weaved it back and forth into the new flower bed. We pinned the soaker hose to the ground with yard staples.
The flower bed is ready for flowers! This year is an experiment to see which flowers will survive in our hot climate. Stay tuned. I will report back.
Did you have a project weekend?
xoxo,
Brooke
Check out our backyard projects from a few years ago!
Great project for the entire family! We have heat here also (SC) but also very humid. I usually try to stick with my favorites as what to plant each Spring though sometimes I try something new and hope it will become a staple. We have a lot of shade in the front yard and plants seem to grow better there once the heat of the summer is upon us. We are finally getting rid of our above ground pool so that will open up a new space to add as a new gathering place!

The landscaping looks like its coming along beautifully!
