We are trying our hand at a little flower gardening this year. We ripped out our rocks, installed a soaker hose, and went to town with pay dirt to prepare the flower bed for planting.
We definitely aren’t experts, and I’m chalking it up as “research” to see how the plants do. I live in Southern Utah where the climate is HOT and mostly dry. We are not 100% sure which plants will thrive and which ones won’t survive. But, I’m excited to finally have a little color to enjoy instead of brown rocks.
Here is the before picture of what it looked like when we moved in, wasn’t she pretty?
Since, some of you might have a similar climate, I wanted to share as much as possible in case it will help you. Here is an outline of what we chose to plant.
I’m hoping to show an update in a month{ish} to show how it has progressed. I’m particularly excited about the hostas, the canna lilies, and the sweet potato vines. I’m hoping they will grow a lot in a month.
The desert daisies are the bright yellow ones along the border, and the rest are intermixed. The sweet potato vines are planted directly behind the rocks, so that when they start to creep, it will cover the rocks {fingers crossed}.
And, if I’m being 100% honest, there are other flowers in here that we planted, that I have no idea what they are called. I was like a kid in a candy store when I went to the nursery. I bought a lot of colors because I wanted all. the. things.
After we ripped out our rose bushes, I was adamant about putting in friendlier plants so that when my kids ride past on their bikes, their clothes won’t get ripped up. We chose turf lilies and a rosebud tree that blooms in the spring.
It’s been a lot of work, and I’m so excited to see how it does! I’ll post an update in a month or so.
xoxo,
Brooke
If you missed our backyard project, check it out HERE! You will love it! <—at least I DO!
It all looks so pretty. I love the Canna especially because it’s one I’ve admired but never had any success with – I think my yard is just too shaded. Hummingbirds are attracted to Canna too.
Wow. Your flower garden look awesome. I am thinking about planting some flowers myself. How did you come up with the flower choices.? I do not know where to start in choosing flowers.
I like it! Excited to see the update next month!

We live in a hot, dry climate as well, and I’ve been amazed and how little water and how much production we get using the Back to Eden methods. In my existing flower beds I put down a bunch of compost and then a bunch of wood chips and it was piled so high! But it all breaks down and retains moisture better, and my overall soil condition has improved 300% in just one year. Check it out!
