I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas! Do you travel on Christmas or do you opt to stay put? We switch off where we go every year for Christmas, so since we were with my family for Thanksgiving, we spent Christmas with Dan’s family.
Well, every year after we spend the morning at our house on Christmas, we pack up and travel to see family {whichever family is in the rotation for that year}. Our kids love to see their cousins, and we usually stay for several days to celebrate and spend the holiday break together.
Since, Dan’s Mom was planning to make our traditional Christmas breakfast recipe at her house this year for us when we arrived, we decided to change our Christmas morning breakfast plan. [Since heaven knows we don’t need Sticky Buns twice in one day!}
So, instead, we made this delicious caramel overnight baked french toast recipe {that I actually got the recipe from my mother in law too}. It’s similar to the creme brûlée baked french toast recipe that I’ve posted about in the past, but I actually like this one just a tad better.
Caramel Overnight Baked French Toast Recipe {One of Brooke’s Family Favorites}
Ingredients
- 6 eggs
- 1 1/2 c. Cream or Half and Half
- 1 1/2 c. Milk {we use 2%}
- 2 tsp Vanilla
- 1/4 tsp. Cinnamon
- 2-3 Day Old Baguettes or any other dense bread or rolls {we love to use Jimmy Johns Day Old Bread}
- Caramel Sauce:
- 3/4 c. Butter
- 3 T. Karo Syrup
- 1 1/3 c. Brown Sugar
- Caramel/Cinnamon Syrup:
- 3/4 c Butter
- 2 c Sugar
- 1 c Buttermilk
- 3 Tbsp Karo Syrup
- 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp vanilla
Instructions
-
Spray a 9X13 pan with non-stick cooking spray.
-
Cut your bread in diagonal pieces about 1 inch thick and layer them in the pan until it fills the entire pan. We stacked three layers of bread on top of each other.
-
Mix the eggs, cream, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon together with your blender or hand mixer and pour over your bread evenly.
-
Put saran wrap over the top of your pan and put it into the fridge overnight.
-
The next morning:
-
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
-
Make your caramel sauce by placing butter, karo syrup, and brown sugar into a small sauce pan until it boils.
-
Pour caramel sauce over the top of the bread evenly.
-
Bake in the oven for 40 minutes.
-
{place a piece of tin foil beneath the pan to catch drippings of caramel that may spill during baking}
-
Top with whipped cream, Cinnamon/Caramel Syrup, and powdered sugar.
-
Caramel Syrup:
-
Melt Butter,
-
Add Sugar, Milk, Corn Syrup
-
Mix and heat until dissolved.
-
Add Soda-stir constantly as soda makes mixture bubble high!
-
Add cinnamon & vanilla
-
Serve Warm.
Do you have a traditional Christmas morning recipe? I would love it if you would share it in the comments!!
xoxo,
Brooke
I am drooling here wishing I had these for breakfast this morning. This might have to make it’s way into my weekend recipe routine. YUM!
This looks so yummy! Our Christmas brunch tradition is breakfast hash and waffles with berries and ice cream. I don’t think I will ever be able to talk my kids out of changing it, they all say it is their favorite tradition. I can’t blame them. Ice cream for breakfast is pretty cool when you’re a kid. 🙂
This French toast looks amazing! I think I need it in my life asap!
