Shibori fabric dyeing is all the rage, and it’s such a fun way to add color and texture to your life!
I went to Target yesterday and ending up buying a shibori shirt! I’m obsessed! But, traditionally, when you see shibori, it’s primarily indigo, so if you want to dye with indigo, you can buy an indigo kit but since I kiiiiiinda like color, I can’t help but want to add it into everything possible thing. Thanks to Rit Dye, you can go to town and create all the colors super easily.
Before we get started on showing fun pattern ideas, I have to share a few tricks.
- I don’t follow the exact instructions on the Rit Dye.
- I also use a bucket that my project will fit into and add the hottest tap water you can get. Then, start adding colors until you get to a color that you like. Lately, I’ve been adding about 48 ounces of water and 2 Tablespoons of dye.
- Add a few drops of dish soap and pour a tiny bit of salt into the dye.
- Jenny from Little Green Notebook taught me two AMAZING fabric dyeing tips. To test your dye mixture, fold some paper towels and dip it into the mixture. She also says to add a few drops of gray to any color to muddy it up a bit. It’s such a great tip!
- The patterns do NOT need to be perfect. In fact, if they run together a bit, that means you are doing it right!
Genius right?
On to the fun different patterns. And truthfully there are about a gazillion different things you can do, these are just ones that I happen to love!
