DIY Outdoor Halloween and Harvest Decor Ideas

There are some talented people in this world. Today I’m part of a really fun virtual party to show off our versions of the Fall Home Depot workshop project! If you have ever been to a workshop at the Home Depot, you know they are really fun and even better, they are FREE!  The workshop is THIS Thursday from 6:30-8 pm and you will learn how to make these darling Harvest signs! Don’t forget to REGISTER so that your local store can plan on you attending.

If you have read All Things Thrifty for awhile, you won’t be surprised. We are the “pumpkin people” on our street, and I turned my version of these adorable signs into PUMPKIN signs! 🙂

I hand drew a few pumpkins on a 4X8 foot sheet of birch plywood. {But here’s a tip, if you don’t have a truck, have the Home Depot Associate cut it in half at the store so that it will fit better in your car}.

Then, I cut out the pumpkins with my cordless Milwaukee jigsaw.

My husband said they looked like APPLES. In hindsight, he was right. Shhhhh don’t tell him I said that.

But, as soon as designed some cute vinyl jack-o-lantern decals with my Silhouette CAMEO®, they quickly transformed into pumpkins.

You could probably draw the faces on without the decals, but I’m a perfectionist, so I wanted to use decals so that they were designed ahead of time.
Then, we traced the vinyl with a pencil. {Or in my case a PURPLE pencil since that’s all I could find in my house…thank you kids for losing every single pencil I have.}
In their defense, my kids helped me trace the faces, so they are pretty awesome after all.
Then, I took off the vinyl.
Then, I cut out the faces with my jigsaw. {Ok truth be told, Dan helped me a TINY bit, but I did most of the work, I promise}. Sometimes I don’t think he can stand watching me do all the work. HAHA.

Before we could cut the faces out, we took a large drill bit and drilled holes in the wood to give us access to cut with the jigsaw.
I didn’t even paint these bad boys! I do plan to at least seal them to protect them from rain and the colder fall weather.

We placed our cordless spotlights behind them and they turned out so darn cute! I had planned to put the lights around the outsides like in the Home Depot’s version, but I decided that I liked them just the way they were!

What do you think? Should I put the lights around them?!?

Don’t forget to Register to attend the workshop this Thursday in your area!

I’m guessing that you will get to practice cutting with a jigsaw, and attending Home Depot workshops are how I learned to be comfortable with power tools! Now that I’ve shown you my version of this project, check out the other projects too. There are some VERY cute ones!
