Last week (ish) I posted about this magnificent desk from a Las Vegas Goodwill store. It cost me $12.00. I am in the process of refinishing the desk for my 7 year old daughter Oaklyn. Sorry folks the desk is not for sale.
She helped me pick the color, and I’m super excited about it.
Want a sneak peek?
I will be glazing the desk to help accentuate the details of the desk, but I haven’t started the glazing process yet.
Glazing is one of my favorite ways to refinish furniture. If you have been around All Things Thrifty for awhile, you already know this. 🙂 It’s no secret that’s for sure, but some of you are new around here. WELCOME by the way. So, let me show you a few glazed furniture items to show you what glazing can do.
Glazing allows you focus on the details of the piece. As you can see in this yellow furniture, the details can’t be seen very well at this stage of the process. (I painted this furniture Bauhaus Gold from Krylon by the way).
After I glazed the furniture, the details are accentuated. It changes the look of the furniture completely. To check out more pictures of this project check out my Yellow Furniture post.
These night stands are currently in my master bedroom!
The thing I like most about refinishing furniture myself, is that I can create a unique look that “everyone” doesn’t have. I like creating ultra unique conversation pieces for my home. It makes me happy when someone says, WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NIGHTSTANDS!?!? I like that my decorating style is different than the usual show room floor at the furniture store.
Here are a couple more examples of glazed furniture that I’ve done over the last year or so:
I have tried to answer your questions about the glazing process in my Glazing FAQ post.
I have also put together a Glazing 101 post to demonstrate my glazing process:
Beautiful! I have a dresser in my sunroom that matches the desk you bought for your daughter. I'm hoping to find more matching pieces so I can use them in my daughter's room!

70's flashback! I had this furniture in my bedroom as a teenager. Can you imagine it with a two-tone shag purple rug on the floor?
We bought pieces throughout the decade to match and over time the fronts of the drawers were offered only in plastic rather than the wood.
I like your fun transition!
Ok, I am DROOLING over that desk-GORGEOUS! Can't wait to see the rest!
Hi Brooke,
This is a little unrelated to the particular desk your posting about, but I've been meaning to ask about this for a while.
I have been spray painting many things around my house and seem to be running into the same problem over and over. The paint is crackling in certain parts. Have you ever had this happen?
I use Krylon paint, and Kilz primer. I let it dry hours in between coats. I'm sanding. I also clean the furniture really well before painting. I honestly don't know what I could be doing that would make it crackle.
If anyone has had this happen, I would appreciate any feedback!!
Thanks!!!
I love your blog!!!
I am wondering how long you wait inbetween coats of spray paint. It seems like everyone -and every brand- has a different time. Thanks so much!!
Oh my gosh, our goodwill would NEVER price that desk for $12! Boo. They overprice everything… that desk would be at least $50 at our dumb store. Great find! 🙂
Ashley, what temperature are you spray painting in? If it is too cold the paint will not bond like it should. Also make sure to wipe off your furniture between each coat so there will not be dust on the surface. If any dust is on it, it will prevent the next coat from bonding.
Ashley, I have had the crackling happen with spray paint and it isn't the temp. I live in Vegas. First, I think Krylon is the worst spray paint. Especially the light colors. They don't stick, they drip, they don't cover, and they crackle. I think the crackling happens when you get too much paint in one spot, which happens alot with krylon because the coverage is so awful that you tend to spray too much at once. I like rustoleum much better, although krylon has more fun colors. I wonder if krylon would work better holding the can completely vertical. I tend to use it on small things like frames and can't figure out a way to spray them standing up so they have to lay down. But is takes me like 1/2-3/4 of a can of krylon just to paint a frame. I am swearing off Krylon for good. It just never works well for me. As a note, I have mostly used it on plastic items. I do prime them with plastic primer first, but it still does not work. Maybe it works better on wood. Also, the Krylon says to only wait one minute between coats. Maybe that would work if your coats were SUPER light, but with a normal coat I think you need to wait a bit longer.
Good Luck.
Love this blog! The desk is going to be sooo cute. I take it you don't live in Vegas but just like to raid out Goodwills for all the good stuff???j/k
Thanks everyone for the ideas! I live in Michigan, but I usually spray paint in the spring and summer. I am going to try a different paint. It seriously drives me nuts!
I found you blog awhile ago and now I love visiting to see what new project is happening. It is so easy to get rid of unwanted furniture, but making it beautiful requires patience and creativity. I see both in your projects.
this brings me back to the 70's. We used to call it antiqueing back then. I loved it then and now- it really brings out the details. All it was then was a glaze put over latex paint-probably the same thing now. Luv your blog!
Hi — I just stumbled on your site for the first time. I love your yellow nightstands, but even more, your headboard! Did you make that as well?
So cute!! I am kinda bugged by the DI's up here in SL. I found a similar desk the other day and they wanted 250.00. Yep 250.
In our city that desk would be 129.95. Our Salvation Army and Goodwill store prices are outrageous here.
sorry the david one is me I didn't realize he was signed in ha
I hope you don't mind but I mentioned your blog in mine at simplyaskew.com love your work<3
I own this desk and the entire bedroom collection (it was in my room as a child, and all of my sisters in turn). Now it lives with my husband and me until we can afford newer furniture. However, I am really excited to see how this desk turns out, because it may be time to revamp them this summer.
Also, wondering if you just spray painted the formica on the top of the desk, or if you stripped it off. That part is the hardest part to work around.
Wow, your furniture is lovely and so is your blog! Would love for you to stop by and visit mine!
Furnitures are looks very good and look like very rich. wonderful designing and superb art on it.

I used that same pink watermellon paint for my daughters dresser that I glazed as well. I was scared it was gonna be too loud but it looks great! I can't wait to see the desk finished!
Oh my gosh I just painted my goodwill find the same spray paint pink color. I love how it turned out and have been really toying with the idea of glazing it. -Thanks to you I have a fresh new can of glaze from the good Ole HD ;). The dresser I got has some GREAT detail on it I am just not sure if I want to bring it out since it is in my daughters room. Oh now I am confused. Can't wait to see how your desk turns out glazed. I adore your yellow night stand! Thanks for all your great ideas.
