The other day I was flipping through my Martha Stewart Halloween Handbook, and I saw a cool project using glow in the dark glue sticks to make cobwebs. Well, instead of getting glow in the dark glue, I found out that you can buy black glue sticks for a hot glue gun. I got mine at Amazon.com.
After your black hot glue is nice and hot in your glue gun, simply make your spider web onto a rubber mat.
Sidenote:
Do NOT do this on wax paper…it does NOT come off.
Do NOT do this on a plastic folder….it does NOT come off. 🙂
After a few failed attempts, and a few trips to find the “hot glue mat” that the Martha magazine suggested, I finally tried it on one of my IKEA flexible cutting boards. It worked like a charm! I never found that “hot glue mat” by the way.
After it dried completely, I had to use a metal spatula to get it started. Once it began coming off, it was easy to peel away from the mat.
Sidenote:
Do NOT put it in the freezer to cool it down. I tried this and it froze…then when I tried to get it off, it shattered. (Man I have a lot of do NOTs on this project don’t I!?!) It is better to just let it cool down at room temperature.
After you have removed your webs from the mat, put them where ever you would like!
I put some on my Halloween mirror for added spookiness!
I thought they made a fun touch on my Halloween Mirror!
Think of all the things you could make with black hot glue!!! My mind was swirling with bats…spiders…crows…sticks…witches hats….all sorts of Halloween items! I have a ton glue sticks left over for next year…or the next project.
This is what my Martha Stewart Halloween Handbook looks like. It has some great ideas for those of you who LOVE Halloween like I do. It costs about $10.00.
What a great idea!! We're currently in the process of moving, so all Halloween decorations are on hold, but this idea is going in my save folder to do next year!
So cute! Thanks for sharing this fun idea!
I wish I knew where glow in the dark hot glue was, I'm obsessed with glow in the dark stuff. If you find it, let me know. I'm now on the search for it. Love the black glue cobwebs.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this
THAT is cool! I wonder what would happen if you sprayed Pam on the flexible cutting board first? I'm trying this! I'm trying this!
Great project… I would have never thought of using hot glue for something like this. Thanks for all the Not Tos lol I'm sure It'll save someone tons of time and nerves knowing what Not to do before they even start lol
Hey! I totally have that mat you are talking about! It actually came with a hot glue gun my mom bought me recently at jo ann's…and it's awesome! Hot glue comes right off of it- no spatula necessary!
So cute! I am definitely going to do these! And thanks for the DO NOTS! Because my first thought was, "oh, you could do it on wax paper" 🙂 ha!
Awesome!! I didn't even know they made black (or glow-in-the-dark, for that matter) glue sticks! COOL!!
The cobwebs are cute, but your picture and write up in the newest "alumni magazine" is cuter!
My son got his first issue today and while flipping thru it, I did a double take- thought I was reading a magazine, not reading blogs!
I am so trying this..and purchase the mag!
Those are so cute! I've never seen black glue sticks before… Neat
You can also do this with black fabric paint. The kind in the squeezy bottle. You can draw your design directly onto glass and peel it off to reposition it.
