I have had this huge chunky black mirror for about 5 years. I got it at IKEA, and I’ve talked about this mirror before. I love it. It is one of those items that always catches the eye of someone in my home. It is great. It only cost me $99.00, and they still sell one that is very similar at the same price. Gotta love that place.
So recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of changing the frame. I need a change, and unfortunately, this is basically the only wall in my home that it can go on right now. So, I can’t change its location. I have so many ideas, and I’m having a hard time deciding. I know right now it is pretty classic, and it matches everything. So one concern I have is that when/if I change it, it won’t be as versatile. But, then again, has this EVER stopped me before? No.
What do you think I should do? I need opinions.
I say Paint it! You can always go back black.
I think I would etch the mirror with a scrolly design similar to what you have in your kitchen. It would keep the versatility of the piece, but would change up the look.
I think stenciling a scrolly or ivy like design on the frame would be awesome. You could always paint it back to black if you don't like it or want to change it. Better yet, put a vinyl design on it…they peel right off!
I have the same mirror, have had it for 3 years and I keep thinking I want to do something to it but then I change my mind. Maybe if I see you do something amazing to it I'll copy you 🙂 My sis in law has a smiliar mirror and she modge podged tissue paper on it and then took a stamp and stamped a pattern on it, it turned out really cute!
Maybe add some of those decorative moldings to it for extra flair.that way you would keep it black and just paint the moldings.. or paint it all one color. Some of those molding pieces are awesome.
I saw this great stenciled mirrow on Sumo's Sweet Stuff link party yesterday. Here's the link:

Hello! I'm fairly new to your blog and love, love, love it. I think silver leafing it would look awesome with the black showing through. Or another simple and cheap solution…stamping a cool damask-y type pattern all over it in a contrasting color. Good luck. Can't wait to see the final product.
Always move forward.
Since stencil is back in that's what I would go for. Something subtle though- I think it would make it look more expensive which is always a good thing 😉 Maybe a tone on tone harlequin pattern would be cool too! I love projects like this!
vinyl! its removable! 🙂
I like the idea of tone-on-tone stenciling in a geometric pattern or adding some moulding. Love the mirror as is but completely get you want to change it up. With either one of those options, you can always go back to the way it is now.
I am partial to black, so I kinda like it the way it is. However, I also understand when you get that itch. Having said that, I have 2 suggestions. 1) Decoupage the frame with some cool paper or gift wrap or whatever or 2) leave the frame alone and play with the glass. You can either etch the glass or actually paint something on it. I recently saw a mirror with a hot pink zebra face painted on it and it rocked. It would never go in my house but I still loved it.
I have 2 options that wont change the classic look to much. 1. is to glue textured glass pieces [which you can buy at michael's] to it. and you can buy the glass in clear 2. is to glue or grout crystal tiles to it in different shade of black gray and white or even clear
How about taping off and painting a small stripe around the frame and painting it with an accent color?
I have lusted after this mirror for 5 years! I wanted it to hang over my head board. My husband was afraid it would fall and crush us. I finally after years ,of wanting it or something close, I have a piece I love.

so my mom has this same mirror and she put it up vertical above her fireplace and it looked AWESOME! its probably not enough change for YOUR little FANCY but its an idea!!!
I say leave it black and go vertical with it. Add some shelving or other artwork to the side to create some new interest on that wall. I think you will regain your love of this mirror by simply flipping its position. 🙂
I say either etch the glass, or maybe hang something cute from the center of it? Where your mirror is so big, it will still leave plenty of "mirror" space! Good luck!
I'm wondering what happened to that coffee table you asked opinions on about a year ago. That's one of the first posts I read after I became a follower. Did you ever do anything with it? Maybe I missed it.
I'm with Rhiannon – use vinyl to change the appearance of the frame!
I'd go for silver leafing or gold leafing depending on what else is close by.
I have that exact mirror and people comment on how much they like it all the time! I have mine in our entry way leaning on the wall. It's nice to get one last look before you head out the door. I'm excited to see what you do with yours!
I vote etch the glass. Something small and simple in the corner maybe. It would give some change, but keep it versatile.
Stripe painting sounds nice. I just added printers blocks to one… you can see it here: http://www.pegomh.blogspot.com might not be practical for yours but oh so fun!

I have 2 suggestions. You could paint it to spice it up or you could put it vertical somewhere! I can't wait to see what you decide!!
What if you put a vinyl saying at the bottom. Wouldn't mess up the original look of the mirror (in case you wanted to go back to that later) and the vinyl would peel off easily when you wanted to change it up again. I take the easy way out and order everything from uppercase living, but you are so crafty and handy, I bet you could make your own cute saying. Maybe something that means something to your family or something like that.
P.s. I am TOTALLY addicted to your blog. We just bought a new home and I am pouring over Craigslist everyday looking for the right dining set to re-do!
Since you like the mirror so much already, I would just add to it. For a wooden antique mirror in my living room, I just hung a red wreath in the middle of it. It adds a lot of character, and I love the way it turned out. Your lima bean wreath would be awesome with it!
Wow that is stunning! Could you please share what kind of blanket is on the bed? Is it a down comforter with a duvet cover on it?
I would like to buy a down blanket but I am not sure what to look for. Any advice?
What about your bedroom? What is that yellow blanket? Did you make it? Or where could someone buy one?
Leave the mirror alone and paint the wall! You get an art piece(the mirror) and an accent wall!
In one of my painting books they took a stencil and used plaster instead of paint for a raised effect…then painted and glazed it. It looked really cute.
i would leave it alone!! i am a classic black and white kind of girl…it looks so clean and if you paint it it WONT look he saemas it does now…maybe add a cluster of frames around the mirror to give the mirror some company! the frames could even be a variety of colors to add a bit more character!!
What about something like this? http://iheartnaptime.blogspot.com/2010/07/fabric-flower-wreath.html
It doesn't actually change the mirror, but would dress it up a bit and you could even change it to match the seasons….
get a sheet of penny round tiles and pull pieces from the mesh to glue to the frame–fun!
