Tutorial: How to hang a window valance.

I’ve had a lot of questions on how to hang my window valance idea. I have to give a little “plug” in here about Dan the man…the most handiest man I’ve ever met. Yep…he’s my hubsters. He is always my go to guy when it comes to the technicalities of hanging and constructing my CRAZY ideas. Thanks babe for answering all my nutty questions about this post.
(I think he got a kick out of me trying to explain how to do this).
Here is the answer! It took me awhile to find the pictures of the hardware.
My husband bought some “L brackets” at Home Depot. If you click on the picture it will enlarge so you’ll be able to see them better. This picture is after he had installed them onto the wall, obviously before the valance went into place.

The tricky part is that you need to make sure that you are screwing into studs. If studs are not available you will need to use sheet rock anchors instead. The screws are 2 1/2 inches long, so the L brackets were nice and secure before the valance went up.

The 2 L brackets go directly on the inside of the two outside edges of the valance. The top holes in the hardware are left unused.

This picture is taken from directly below the valance.

Your measurements will have to be precise. Your hardware will need to be on the wall before you hang the valance, so measure very carefully. You’ll need at least two people to help hold the valance in place (ours was super heavy!) while you screw the hardware onto the valance.

The end result is worth it. 🙂

Good luck! Don’t forget to send pictures of your finished projects to allthingsthrifty at gmail dot com.

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was hoping I'd get an answer soon – as soon as *MY* hubby and I get over this nasty sickness we are finishing this project!!

  2. I love your living room. You are so talented! Thank you for all the decorating ideas and details on how to accomplish these fabulous projects. I was also wondering where you got your beautiful picture of the Savior with the little children? Please share. 🙂 Thank you again for sharing all things thrifty with me.

  3. Thank you so much! I'm so excited to receive a reply so quickly and in the form of a post. My husband was able to read it through and know exactly what to do. Now if my wallpaper would just get here in the mail from Lowes we'll be ready to go. Can't wait to get it finished. Thanks again!

  4. I really love this window treatment. I made a headboard for my bed that is the same idea in that it used the crown moulding. Your blog is excellent too I might add! Linking up to bungalowonbank.com

  5. So did you just screw the L brackets into the valance??is that the only way it is being held up? Did you put one or two screws in?

  6. I want the small ones!!! I never thought about doing this particular valance over french doors. It would help over my tab top sunblock lined drapes. They are awesome keeping the sun out, only the morning sun’s reflection glares out over the top. Next project for sure. Great tutorial.

  7. Hi Brooke, I’m very behind on getting into this conversation. I noticed you had triple windows under your valance. How do you support your rod since the center hits the middle window. My windows are under a recessed bulkhead and there is no place for a support. On a lighter note, do you suppose our husbands are related? We don’t find “Ulrich” very often . God Bless your day. Michele
