Using Old Windows in your Home Decor

Today I get to be on Fresh Living (a television show here in Utah)! I’m really excited, and I get to share some fun projects that you can make out of old, reclaimed items.
Using old windows in your home is a fun way to add a bit of charm to any room. You can buy old windows from antique stores for $15.00-$50.00. Sometimes if you are lucky, you can get them for free if you are in the right place at the right time. If you ever see a neighbor replacing their old windows, sometimes all it takes is a short conversation and you’ll end up with scads of old windows for free. My sister has even seen old buildings being torn down and asked the owners for the windows or doors. The owners were more than happy to get rid of the old windows.
Recently a friend of mine dropped off several old windows for me after he cleaned out a bank foreclosure. I’ve used some of the windows in Creed’s room as part of the wall decor.

I was thrilled at how they turned out, and after the owl window project, the same friend brought me some longer windows (Thanks SHAWN!!). I was really excited to use them, so I designed some vinyl on my Sihouette machine to make it look like an old confectionery shop window. I made the window for my friend Jill’s House, and I loved it so much, that I had to make myself an orange version for my orange kitchen.  I wanted the window to look like an old Ma and Pop Confectionery shop. I wanted to have a vintage feel, so I chose fonts to mimic that look. I basically wanted the window to look like it could have been removed from an old shop and put up in my home after it was torn down or closed for business.  Confectionery Shop I loved how the design turned out!Confectionery Shop 1 The inside dimensions of the glass was 58 inches long and about 15 inches tall. So, with the help of my Silhouette Cameo, I cut 12” vinyl.

I chose orange to match my kitchen decor, but you can buy vinyl in dozens of colors. Christmas and Window pics 059Christmas and Window pics 062

I used Jade vinyl for the window for Jill’s House, and it turned out super cute too! I love making unique/boutique items to decorate with. At Jill’s house, her window is part of the decor above her kitchen cabinets. Londyn's birthday 287 Londyn's birthday 290 Along with using old windows, I like to use reclaimed wood for projects too. I made this fun barn wood sign for Creed’s room because my husband Dan loves to sing “You are my sunshine” to our kids when they are going to sleep. Nursery Decorating Ideas 3

To dress up an old window, you can also hang a simple wreath from it. I hung a holiday wreath from my barn wood advent calendar project to add a festive feel to the advent calendar too!

  1. I've been using old barn windows too! If you check out my blog, you'll see that I put painted canvases into the old windows, so it looks like you're looking out onto a scene. The best way to view them is to click on 'paintings' under the labels section on the right hand side.

  2. I use one in my dining room with a wreath hanging on it and I made a matching one into a chalkboard menu sign in my kitchen to match!

    I LOOOOVE old windows!

  3. Love this!! I have a Silhouette Cameo and am going to have to give the vinyl thing a try. My best friend just received her Cameo and she's already experimenting with vinyl. Where do you shop for your colors?

  4. Taylor,
I get a lot from their online store, but I have bought some at the local craft stores too if I need it in a hurry. I found the jade and orange vinyl at Robert's Crafts! Good luck on your Silhouette projects…you are going to be addicted!!! xoxo
