It’s not a secret that painting furniture is the norm around here, and Krylon is my favorite spray paint, and believe me I’ve used a lot of brands. The nozzle is by far the best one out there. If you haven’t used Krylon… just try it. 
{They don’t pay me to say that either…all opinions are 100% mine}. Krylon paint comes out in a flat spray pattern {instead of round} and it makes the finish look professional. I have lots of painting tutorials, but I’ll give you a refresher course and a few tips and tricks a little later.
Painting furniture is a great option for anyone, but you should to do it right or your paint will chip off easily. You don’t want to spend valuable time and money on a project that won’t last. Don’t worry I have painted hundreds of furniture pieces and have made every mistake in the book. I will help you make the right choices.
For renters, painting your furniture is an easy way to add pizzazz to your room. It adds an instant POP of color. Believe me, I rented for years. I know how you feel if you are in that category. My friend Suz rents and is surrounded with white walls that are off limits to paint. Soooo, naturally she chose to add a pop of color through painting furniture. She got the hutch at an online yard sale for $100, and although the hutch was already in pristine shape, Suz wanted something unique and different.
Step 1: Clean your furniture FIRST!
We started this project by wiping off all the dust and grime. We were careful to wash it carefully so that the surface was clean.
Then I used the techniques that I’ve explained in previous posts {click on the images below}.
Step 5: Glaze your furniture to accentuate the nooks and crannies. For detailed instructions on how to glaze furniture, check out my glazing 101 and glazing FAQ pages.
Step 6: Seal the surfaces that will need it with polycrylic. I don’t seal the entire piece of furniture, but I do seal the parts that will need it {for example, the top of an end table, the part on a hutch that the TV sits, the top of a piano, a kitchen table…etc.}For tips and tricks on how to use polycrylic, check out THIS post and scroll down about half way.
I am thrilled with the result. Suz did an amazing job.
I love how detailed and meticulous she was in the painting process. It helps to be picky because then it will look like you BOUGHT it like that, and her hutch definitely looks great.

Great job, looks good, like the fact that you reused the original hardware. Thanks for including the number of cans of primer and paint you used. Good to have idea of quantity need for that size of a project. Had a friend call me this morning to see if I wanted to buy a hutch she has that I like, well had to say no cause I already have 4, one to refinish. After I refinish one I will think about the others, LOL.

I like that you prefer a sealer like Polycrylic rather than wax. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to me that wax is going to be a problem down the line if someone wants to change to a different paint color. Wax is going to resist any water based paints, right? Wouldn't it have to be stripped off or would just a primer be bonding enough?

I love the transformation. It looked so heavy and dated before and the after version with the beautiful color instantly converted it to a modern masterpiece. Amazing what paint can do. Great work!

How do you handle the inside of such a piece ? Edges of doors, drawers, etc. ?
Just tried spraying primer for the first time…wow, I’m a believer now. Thanks for the great tip on the Kilz primer.
It worked well and was so fast. For those curious no drips at all if you stand 10-12 ” away.

It’s actually just white. The pictures are taken in bad lighting. The color is called Whisper White.
Does the Krylon Paint & Primer in one or Dual (i think) work as well as the separate prime then paint process? Thanks!
No it doesn’t work near as well. 🙂
